Building ESG Skills Through VET: The Emerging Role of Vocational Training in Sustainable Business

As ESG becomes essential in business, VET providers have a key role in preparing Europe’s workforce for a sustainable transition. Here’s how training institutions can embed ESG into vocational education and collaborate with SMEs.

Why ESG belongs in vocational education

The EU’s sustainability goals depend on equipping people with the skills needed for green and responsible business practices. Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers are at the centre of this effort, preparing professionals who can apply ESG principles in real workplaces.

Bridging the skills gap

SMEs often face barriers such as limited time, knowledge, and resources to implement sustainability practices. VET institutions can help bridge this gap by designing short, targeted programmes on topics like sustainable operations, data collection, or ethical leadership.

Collaboration in practice

Partnerships between VET providers and SMEs can make ESG training more practical and business-relevant. The ESG Knowledge Framework developed by ESG for Enterprise offers a reference for curriculum design, ensuring alignment with EU policy frameworks such as GreenComp and ESCO.

Through joint projects, apprenticeships, and online learning modules, VET institutions can provide real-world ESG experience that benefits both learners and employers.

The future of ESG learning

Micro-learning and digital platforms are transforming vocational education. By integrating ESG content into flexible formats , including micro-credentials ,  VET providers can meet the evolving needs of both students and enterprises.

Empowering sustainable growth

By embedding ESG literacy into training pathways, Europe’s VET systems can drive a culture of responsible business across sectors. SMEs equipped with ESG-aware talent will be better positioned to innovate, compete, and grow sustainably.
